Vegetable Rack

The Challenge

Hey, my wife wants me to build her a small table where she can store her garden produce over the winter. I have some skills but I think for this project you have better skills. I have a picture of the item in question. If you are interested in the project I can bring over the picture and you can give me a price.

The Base Design

Building custom baskets from scratch would have significantly increased both time and material costs. I found these wooden crates from Home Depot that fit the budget and the aesthetic perfectly, so I designed the structural rack around these standard dimensions.

CAD Design

I used Fusion 360 to sketch out the design before cutting any wood. Starting with the fixed dimensions of the purchased baskets, I worked backwards to ensure the frame would hold them securely without wasting material.

Final Design

I repurposed pallet wood for the frame, using a chop saw to cut pieces to length and a table saw to rip the shelf supports to the correct width. Assembly was quick using a nail gun, resulting in a sturdy, rustic rack that fits the storage baskets perfectly.
